"We owe everything to Metallica," says David Ellefson about Megadeth.

“These guys broke down doors for each of us, Anthrax, Slayer…”, says the bassist.

In music, it's always important to acknowledge the inspirations and paths that resulted in great bands, songs, and works. In the case of Megadeth , that band is Metallica .

In a recent interview for the Talkin' Rock , Megadeth bassist David Ellefson spoke about the band's influence on the metal scene and what everyone was doing from the mid to late 80s. “Oh, sure. I mean, look, we're all just a branch of Metallica's family tree. I mean, let's face it. Especially Megadeth, with Dave [Mustaine] being there, and then me being a branch of Dave with Megadeth. So, I mean, look, we owe everything to Metallica.”

“These guys broke down the doors for each of us, Anthrax, Slayer . Bands today, Lamb of God, Pantera , none of that would have happened without Metallica being up there like the 800-pound gorilla just clearing a path through the jungle that would never allow heavy metal to enter,” says Ellefson.

“The things they’re capable of doing and the size and scope with which they’ve been able to break down those doors has changed all of our lives – as musicians, as fans, as everything,” Ellefson continued. “That’s why I think when they did the ‘Big 4’ shows with us in 2010 and 2011, that was a huge olive branch. But the fact that they came back and, again, offered that olive branch to us and just said, ‘Hey, we were all in this together. Let’s celebrate what we did together so many years ago.’ And I think that says a lot about how cool Metallica is.”

Nothing like a friendship between giants to fill our hearts, right?
